Fenton, Michigan was first established in 1834 and was actually named after one of it's first settlers Clark Dibble. The name Dibbleville as the towns established name would carry on until 1837 when William Fenton named it after himself as Fentonville. The post office records show the name Fentonville was used until 1886 when the name Fenton was adopted and is still the current name of the city.
The town of Fenton, Michigan had it's largest change in it's history during the 1970's when developers brought proposal to the city for an urban development project that would level most of the historic downtown buildings and build a more strip mall style set of buildings. Looking back at the past, many current city residents and even city officials see this as one of the biggest disasters ever to hit to small town of 11,000 people. There was the much talked about F2 tornado to hit Fenton in 2007 causing some major damage in the downtown area, but the city would recover fast and get lucky with only minor injuries reported.
In 2011 residents would see a major change coming with the first large building development to be approved in downtown along Leroy St. Named the cornerstone building, it would consist of over 30,000 square feet of retail, office, and residential and put the first stake in the ground toward a downtown redevelopment plan the city had hoped for. The good news would keep coming in 2013 with the multi-million dollar renovation of the old Fenton Fire Station into the Fenton Fire Hall, a modern american restaurant with multiple levels, outdoor seating, a rooftop area, and more.
2016 would continue to bring more good news for the downtown of Fenton with the remodeling of older buildings and new business emerging such as an expansion of Crust bakery, El Topo Mexican Street Food, Relief & Resource Speakeasy Bar, and more. Downtown Fenton, Michigan has continued to be one of the most thriving cities in Michigan and clearly has a bright future ahead of it.
